The Villa for a Group

Sleeping & en-suite quality
Five bedrooms across four buildings, every one en suite with a walk-in shower. Two convert to twins, so five couples or a mixed group of ten both work.
Flow & shared living
A main house for the gathering and three guest houses for the retreating. Couples get their own front door and still meet at the pool.
Kitchen & the long table
Every building has its own kitchen, so early risers and late sleepers never negotiate. The group's table is outdoors, where Syros keeps it most of the year.
Design calibre
Expansive glass, white volumes, the Aegean doing the decorating.
The court and the pool from directly above
A daybed in the lounge, the terrace doors open
The poolside bar under its pergola
The guest house lounge and its fireplace
Armchairs at the picture window, the sea through it
The main living room, open to its sea terrace
A bedroom balcony with its own jacuzzi, the view past it

The Setting

Seclusion & neighbour distance
Out of town on the edge of a nature reserve, the blue unbroken to the horizon.
Nature, light & views
Sea from the living rooms, the terraces and most beds, and the Cycladic light from first coffee to last swim.
Quiet
A nature reserve on one side, the sea on the other, and the beach five minutes on foot.
The pergola lounge, the Aegean across the whole view
Rattan chairs in the living room, the sea beyond
The cream living room, its doors open to the terrace
A bedroom opening to its balcony, the ensuite beyond

The Padel Court

Verification & privacy
A private court on the grounds with the sea in view, yours alone, all week.
Surface & build
Surface, glass and floodlights to confirm with the house.
Floodlights & play
The meltemi is a summer wind worth planning around, and morning games are the island's own advice.
Aesthetic integration
Set above the water, the horizon as the back wall.
The court with the Aegean open behind it
The court and the pool from directly above

The Kitchen

Chef access & provisioning
Breakfast is prepared for you each morning as part of the stay, and groceries can be delivered before you land.
Local food, a short drive
Ermoupoli's restaurants and shops are ten minutes off. Syros is the Cyclades' working capital, so its tavernas cook all year rather than only for August.
Wine & produce culture
The island's San Michali cheese has its own protected name, and the loukoumi here predates the tourist trade by a century.
The outdoor kitchen under its pergola, the pizza oven at the end
A white kitchen with the breakfast table beside it
The poolside table under its pergola
Sky blue kitchen cabinets
The white kitchen in the guest house

The Relaxation

Pool & water
A 12 by 7 metre pool with a Sonos system to itself, a jacuzzi on the terrace, and a staircase down to a small private pier for the morning swim in open water.
Sauna, ice, spa
Wellness treatments come to the house on request. The sea handles the cold part.
Sleep & unprogrammed space
A hammock, four buildings to lose the afternoon between, and the pier at dusk.
The infinity pool on the cliffside above the Aegean
Deck chairs in the whitewashed courtyard
The jacuzzi on its terrace, the Aegean in front
A white bedroom opening to its terrace, the sea beyond it
The courtyard staircase and its arched door

The Service on site

On-site staff & housekeeping
Housekeeping every day of the week, and laundry handled by the house's own staff.
Upkeep & grounds
Garden, pool and court kept while you play.
Runs-itself factor
A welcome on arrival, essentials waiting, restaurants booked before you ask.
The terrace table, the bay below it
A double bedroom, a lighthouse painting over the bed
A shower lined in turquoise mosaic
A twin room with sage headboards

The Feeling

Arrival & sense of place
The island appears from the ferry rail or the plane window, and then the house does the same thing to the sea.
The week that arranges itself
Court in the morning, the pier at noon, Ermoupoli when the evening asks for it.
Loungers at the infinity pool, the horizon past it
The covered terrace laid for dinner, the sea beyond

Pick a week to start

Weeks run Friday to Friday, with the option to adjust the days and the period in shoulder season once I check availability with the villa. Temperature and sunlight are averages, not a forecast. This villa prices September on its own, between the shoulder weeks and the peak. September is priced on its own here, between the shoulder weeks and the August peak, because it is the month the island keeps for itself.

Villa Finsbury, a private villa in Syros, Greece with its own court. The whole place, sleeps 10. The week planned end to end.

The practical questions about Villa Finsbury

    Why book through you?

The villas are looked after by people who are particular about who they work with, and they work with me. That takes time to earn and it is why this collection grows slowly, a villa at a time.

You pay the villa's own rate, and the week costs no more for my being in it: my commission comes out of what the villa already charges. The Concierge, Driver, Chef and Coach are quoted alongside it as one price, and I am on call for them all week. Every enquiry comes to me, so the person who answers is the person who arranges it.

Is there a security deposit at Villa Finsbury?

The villa sets its deposit and it is written into your agreement before you book. Ask me and I will tell you the figure for your dates.

When do we arrive, and can we book a shorter stay?

Any day, minimum 5 nights. Tell me your dates and I will confirm with the villa.

Which airport do we fly into for Villa Finsbury?

Syros (JSY), about fifteen minutes away by road. You come through Athens either way: thirty-five minutes on by air, or two and a half hours on the fast ferry from Piraeus. There is a helipad on the property for anyone in more of a hurry than that. Add the Driver and you are met at arrivals and driven in.

What comes with the villa, and what can I add at Villa Finsbury?

The whole villa, yours alone, 5 suites for 10. A concierge comes with the villa. Add a driver, a chef and a coach and I plan the week and come back with one price.

What is added to the rate at Villa Finsbury?

It differs by villa. Some quote the week with the cleaning and the taxes inside it; others charge cleaning separately, or tax on the booking fee. I confirm this villa's lines before I quote, so the figure I come back with is the figure you pay.

Is breakfast included at Villa Finsbury, or is that the Chef?

Breakfast is made for you every morning and it is already in the rate, so the kitchen is running from the day you arrive. The Chef pillar is the rest of it: dinners, for one night or all seven, agreed beforehand and cooked at the house. Add it and I quote the two together.

Will the wind stop us playing at Villa Finsbury?

The meltemi blows through the Cyclades in July and August, hardest in the afternoons, and it is the reason the island plays in the morning. Book your court hours before lunch and the wind is somebody else's problem. It is also why September is the month the locals keep: warm sea, no meltemi, and the island back to itself.
